Associate Director of Residence Life/Area Coordinator

George Fox University announces an administrative staff position in Residence Life, to begin July 27, 2020.  The Associate Director of Residence Life / Area Coordinator (AC) is a 10.5-month "live on" position that supervises approximately 200- 250 undergraduate residents in campus student housing, as well as a staff of student-leaders (9-13 per area).

The GFU Residence Life Dept. mission is to provide a Christ-centered educationally based residential community where students are equipped, empowered and challenged to (a) understand their identity, calling and significance in Christ, (b) build authentic communities, (c) develop the ability to lead with grace and mercy, and (d) prepare for a lifetime of service to their community, church and world.  We seek to accomplish this by developing a professional and student staff prepared and able to equip, empower and challenge students and peers. 

Essential Associate Director Duties:

Recruiting Duties:

  1. Provides leadership and direction for all aspects of student leader recruiting. The Associate Director of Residence Life also administers the various related processes pertinent to Residence Life hiring by recognizing needs and initiating solutions.
  2. As directed by the Director of Residence Life, provides leadership and direction for the Area Coordinator Search Committee. Provides administrative oversight to the recruitment process for professional staff, including collaborative efforts with Human Resources to advertise openings, reviewing applicant files, conducting phone interviews and references.  Provides a recommendation to the Dean of Students.

 

Operations Duties:

  1. Oversees all Residence Life publications-editing, formatting and publication.  These include:
  • RL staff (student) manual
  • RL staff (professional) manual
  1. Oversees and monitors the "on-call" responsibilities by ACs and coordinates semester "On-Duty" schedule.  May involve responding to emergency and/or problem situations in an efficient and effective manner to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
  2. Provides leadership to the Residence Life department concerning residential opening and closing procedures. This includes collaboration with the Director of Housing, producing marketing tools, briefing of student leaders on procedures to provide check-out training.

Training duties:

  1. Provides leadership to comprehensive Residence Life training program for student leader staff
  2. Resource for incoming ACs; meeting with them regularly for the first semester or first year as needed.

Accountability Duties:

  1. Assists in the student accountability process by performing specific departmental duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life and counseling Residence Life staff in disciplinary matters.
  • Works with the Director, Associate Dean of Students, Dean of Students and ACs to ensure a system of discipline that is contextual, timely, educational, restorative and redemptive.
  • Creates effective systems for departmental communication regarding disciplinary matters and serves as a resource to ACs.
  1. Assists ACs with the education of students regarding community living, issues of Christian growth, values clarification, lifestyle choices, relationship issues and other areas of personal growth.

Essential Area Coordinator Duties:

  • Provide avenues for community development of residential living area.
  • Supervise educational programming in the living area.
  • Facility management and supervision of the living area.
  • Provide assistance with crisis management, conflict resolution, and mediation for students as needed.
  • Respond to mental health, physical health, spiritual, and conduct concerns as needed.
  • Share on-call coverage with Residence Life staff. Serve as the emergency responder and problem solver when necessary-specifically for weekend coverage.

Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in College Student Affairs or a related field is preferred. Or equivalent combination of Bachelor's degree with three years of post-undergraduate transferable and relevant professional experience.
  • Record of strong communication, interpersonal, problem solving, and mediation skills.
  • Previous experience in Residence Life is preferred.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population of students is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.
