Custodial Carpet Specialist

Job Purpose:

To work with regular and student employees to maintain all carpeted and upholstery surfaces to enhance the beauty and longevity of the all types of carpet and fabrics.

Essential Responsibilities:

1) By actions, words and lifestyle, be a Christian role model putting students first and Christ in everything and living out the Be Known promise at all times.

2) Clean assigned public buildings, dorms and suites daily following established procedures. This includes disinfecting, cleaning and deep cleaning restrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, classrooms, offices, public spaces and a variety of other spaces; clean, dust or wipe vertical and horizontal surfaces; sweep, mop and or vacuum floors; empty / clean garbage cans and recycling bins; wash accessible interior windows and exterior windows; restock and touchup assigned restrooms as needed; perform general cleaning from sidewalks and stairs within 12 feet of entryways of assigned buildings using hand operated tools or small power equipment.

3) Ensure that all assigned buildings are cleaned and ready for occupants daily by completing routine, daily inspections; checking room reservations daily; coordinating weekend coverage as needed; report needed repairs and complete any assigned work orders; supervise and work alongside student workers daily, monitoring student worker time sheets, approving time changes and finalizing all hours at end of each month.  

4) Take security precautions as necessary; Lock and unlock assigned buildings, secure buildings when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants and unsecured areas to Security and turn lights out.

5) Follow all safe use practices. Maintain custodial closets and supplies; ensure custodial closets are organized, clean, stocked and uncluttered. Maintain power equipment and hand tools; floor scrubbers, low and high speed buffers, portable carpet spotters and extractors, upright vacuums and floor sweepers, portable vacuums, tile scrubbing tools and squeegees for cleaning.

6) Follow all safe use practices for all cleaning solutions including the use of appropriate PPE, proper storage and handling, cleaning methods and disposing of cleaning solution packages.  

7) During the summer, Christmas Break and Spring Break extra duties will include, but are not limited to, additional deep cleaning tasks, team cleaning alongside other supervisors and student workers for up to 7 hours per day.

8) Supervise and work alongside full time staff and student employee's cleaning carpet and upholstery for up to 7 hours per day as required, during breaks and throughout the summer.

9) Has complete knowledge of operating various pieces of equipment necessary to effectively perform job functions, such as spotters, portable extractors and truck mount carpet extractor.

o Performs preventative maintenance check on all equipment prior to use and at the end of each shift.

o Ensure that all equipment is kept clean at the end of each shift and reports any damage, malfunctions or safety hazards to the Superintendent.

o Ensures all equipment is left in a safe and secure fashion so that it does not pose a hazard to guests and other workers at the end of each shift."

10) Has complete knowledge of carpet care procedures including how to spot clean and extract all types of carpet and upholstery with minimal to no assistance according to maintenance schedules.

o Establishes and implements complete carpet care program for all types of carpet and upholstery fabric throughout the university.

o Performs periodic, scheduled inspections of all facilities to determine the effectiveness of the carpet care operations.

o Plans and schedules routine and periodic special project carpet care work.

o Prioritize and coordinate with other workers as needed to complete carpet care work within the overall scope of multi-trade projects.

o Interacts with other university departments to minimize disruption.

o Assists Superintendent with inventory, ordering supplies and ensures the use of chemicals and equipment is consistent with established safety standards and practices.

o Secures the work area and post proper safety notices for other users of the space prior to beginning work.  

o Upon completion of carpet work Carpet Tech will update the following: spread sheet including dates, location, type of floor and product used, the Completed Project whiteboard, place all furniture back into living order and will notify the Superintendent in order to keep all information current.    "

Requirements

Ability to read, understand and follow work instructions, directions and safety rules and regulations, in English either verbal or written, to communicate and interact effectively with supervisor, co-workers and customers including face-to-face, on a telephone, on a two-way radio. 

Ability to bend, twist, stoop, reach overhead, climb stairs and 6' ladders, stand, grasp, handle objects, make repetitive motions with hand, wrists and shoulders.

Ability to transport supplies / equipment up to 20 pounds regularly and 40 pounds occasionally.

Ability to follow, administer and interpret custodial policies and procedures.

Ability to work independently while remaining productive.

Ability to work while standing along with significant walking for 7+ hours per day sometimes in temperatures over 90 degrees.

Ability to work on computers to check room reservations, time sheets and email.

Attend all Staff meetings, training, safety meetings and on-campus staff functions.

Must complete Blood Bourne Pathogen training, PPE Hazzard Assessment, Hepatitis B Declination and have read the Custodial Training manual within the first 5 working days of employment.

May be required to plunge obstructed toilets and simple maintenance tasks including, but not limited to light bulb changing.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices in the operation, use and care of various pieces of equipment necessary to effectively perform job functions with general house-keeping equipment.

Knowledge of the materials, methods, implements and equipment used in cleaning and deep cleaning including the maintenance of all tools and equipment.

Perform associated duties as required and/or assigned.

Custodial experience preferred.

Carpet Specialist Requirements:

Must be a full time employee and be able to work weekends and some holidays.

Must have a minimum of 2 years of customer service experience.

Must have Custodial and Supervisory experience at GFU.

Must complete the Advanced Carpet Care training module.

Must be able to work effectively with other departments.

Must demonstrate a high level of integrity when it comes to confidential material, be accurate and detail oriented, as well as be analytical and skilled at problem solving.

Must have computer efficiency and technology aptitude.

Must have strong leadership skills and experience in managing others in multiple remote locations.

Ability to be flexible, work well under pressure, maintains good interpersonal skills, has exhibited high initiative and possess a strong customer service orientation.  

Ability to drive and pass the GFU Driver Certification quiz for fleet and personal vehicle use in order to be the designated driver for their Team.

Ability to read, understand and follow work instructions, directions and safety rules and regulations, in English either verbal or written and must be disconnected from all types of listening devices in order to communicate and interact effectively with supervisor, co-workers and customers including face-to-face, on a telephone, on a two-way radio. 

Ability to work and finish multiple tasks and be thorough with an ability to demonstrate excellence in everything, and continually seek improvement in results.

Ability to work as a team player and to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.

Ability to work well under pressure, maintains good interpersonal skills, has exhibited high initiative and possess a strong customer service orientation. (Due to schedule and last minute job requests)

Knowledge of task delegation and scheduling of work crews.

Is trained and responds to Blood Bourne Pathogen cleanup, flood cleanup and afternoon and weekend emergencies as necessary.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices and the operation, use and care of various pieces of equipment necessary to effectively perform job functions including vacuum cleaners, spotting machines, portable extractors, truck mounted extractor and general house-keeping equipment.

Knowledge of the materials, methods, implements and equipment used in spotting and deep extracting all types of carpet and upholstery including the cleaning and maintenance of all carpet tools and equipment.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move equipment up to 100 pounds up stairs or into a work vehicle. Any lifting in excess of 40 pounds requires the use of a back brace or team lift procedures.
