Engineering Maker Hub Manager

Position Overview:

This individual will provide managerial oversight for the Engineering
Maker Hub facility in support of the mission, strategy, and goals of the College of Engineering.
They will partner with faculty to provide support for academic course projects, specifically the
engineering design spine (including the freshman design courses, servant engineering, and senior
design). They will ensure the facilities can be used safely and effectively, and will be responsible
for providing training and outreach opportunities for current and future users (ie students -
initially supporting 300+ engineering students with a view towards expanding to the entire
campus, faculty, and external partner organizations/stakeholders).

  • Essential Responsibilities
    Recruit, interview, hire, train, delegate daily work, and supervise student and volunteer
    staff.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of training materials and processes.
  • Oversee the inventory requirements and processes for general and course-specific usage.
  • Work with engineering technicians to validate that all equipment is operable and safe.
  • Work with Dean and faculty to ensure that course projects can be conducted effectively
    with priority given to Senior Design, Servant Engineering, and other courses within
    the design spine of the program.
  • Organize and oversee the provision of training events to broaden the effective use of the
    Maker Hub.
  • Organize and oversee outreach events to enhance connections with College of
    Engineering constituents to the Maker Hub, and to the College of Engineering.
  • Monitor and maintain data-collection methods for the Maker Hub facility and
    equipment usage, as well as user demographic data. Develop monthly reports and
    recommendations utilizing these data to effectively plan Maker Hub events and outreach
    activities.
  • Champion EMM (entrepreneurially minded making) development and faculty
    engagement with KEEN, participating with organizations and conferences (e.g. KEEN
    and ISAM) for opportunities and networking.
  • Partner with faculty to provide leadership/support for KEEN related activities/initiatives
    at GFU as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Possess 10+ years of engineering/business related experience, with a desire to be an
    innovative architect in new methods of engineering education.
  • Excellent communicator and team player able to effectively collaborate with professors,
    assisting them with constructive critique and creative input for developing/modifying
    their curriculum to infuse EM (entrepreneurial mindset curiosity, connections, creating
    value) into their courses, leveraging the Maker Hub facility.
  • Passionate about engaging students with transformative educational experiences that
    connect entrepreneurially-minded design-build projects/products to learning outcomes
    resulting in a sustainable EM culture, anchoring the practices of faculty and students
    using the Maker Hub.
  • Possess sufficient business acumen to clearly understand the value and significance of the
    entrepreneurial mindset, and to become a champion for this cause (as we further develop
    the EM culture within our Maker Hub and the College of Engineering).
  • Previous industry work experience as an engineer, and also with technology and/or tech
    transfer, product development, IP/patent processes, and/or business start-up(s).
  • A demonstrable ability to work with younger students (i.e. pre-college age) to champion
    summer "EMM - Maker Camps", monthly Maker Talk Seminar Series, "EM Make-athons", and to introduce and inspire prospective high school students who frequent
    campus to EM.
  • Possess a "maker-mindset" as well as an "entrepreneurial mindset", confident in the
    "hands-on" skill sets which require tinkering, but also possess sufficient experience
    (hobby or professional) with several of the crafts - ie metalworking, wood working,
    welding, 3D printing/prototyping, etc. (confident with using the equipment and having a
    clear understanding of the equipment's capacity).
