Executive Director for Development and Strategic Initiatives

Purpose for this Position:

University Advancement seeks a mission-driven, seasoned, and results-oriented fundraising leader to serve as the Executive Director for Development and Strategic Initiatives. This position reports to the Chief Advancement Officer, Vice President for Advancement.

Responsibilities:

The Executive Director will serve in a vital management and leadership role. In collaboration with the Vice President for Advancement, the Executive Director will lead donor strategy for major and principal gifts, as well as manage and mentor a vibrant development team focused on fundraising, pipeline development, donor relations, and events that are foundational to the team's success.

The Executive Director will work closely with colleagues in the Office of University Advancement, academic leadership, administrators, faculty and others to build and implement effective strategies and collaborative partnerships that will lead to beneficial long-term relationships and significant gift support from these prospective benefactors. The candidate will manage a portfolio and will be expected to achieve a defined fundraising goal annually, with an emphasis on six and seven figure gifts.

As GFU begins developing a comprehensive fundraising campaign, and in consultation with the Vice President for Advancement, the Executive Director will provide leadership in developing campaign strategy, themes, metrics, communications, events, stewardship and volunteer management to accomplish campaign goals. Key to this role will be the Executive Director's ability to establish methods, plans or programs required to meet multi-disciplinary campaign objectives and to build greater alignment, manage the events, communications and stewardship teams to ensure that they are aligned with front-line activities that are delivered with a blend of quality and cost-effectiveness, advance campaign priorities, and are a platform for institutional messaging.

Requirements:

Our ideal candidate is a high-performing, experienced fundraiser who has participated in the development and execution of a successful fundraising campaign and has a passion for donor-centric philanthropy, strong development experience in complex and highly-collaborative environments, and a management style that inspires success, supports team members' professional growth, and models integrity and accountability.

An ideal candidate will also have demonstrated success at raising funds by developing and implementing strategic solicitation fundraising plans that incorporate a concise definition of goals, targeted audiences, and strategies in line with institution and academic goals in higher education, and closing six and seven figure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations, both local and national.

Additional requirements:

  • A bachelors' degree plus a minimum of 5 years of experience in advancement are required.
  • Demonstrated record of writing proposals for a significant project/gift ($100,000 - $1M+)
  • Proven success as a development officer in a highly sophisticated donor-centered fundraising environment as a direct line fundraiser.
  • Experience in the full spectrum of development including gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition and administration.
  • Experience developing a budget to support strategic fundraising efforts.
  • Experience managing a development team and proven success in the team reaching defined goals.
  • Experience managing volunteers
