Superintendent of Grounds

Purpose for the Position:  To oversee and direct all grounds related work at George Fox University.                                                                                                                                                                                    

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Direct all grounds work including scheduled, off hours and emergency work.
  2. Hire, evaluate, train, supervise and release employees (5 & 1/2) and work-study students (30).
  3. Oversee and implement all safety program dealing with Grounds.
  4. Draft, implement and review Grounds standards.
  5. Draft, implement and manage the Grounds budget.
  6. Plan, schedule and estimate Grounds construction projects.
  7. Schedule and manage contractors and contracted labor.
  8. Communicate effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  9. By actions, words and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.                                                                                                                                                                                                         

Associated Duties:

  1. Encourage professionalism and ongoing education with self and staff.
  2. Stay informed/in touch with Grounds trends, products and technologies.
  3. Act as purchasing agent for the department.
  4. Advise Director of Plant Services on Grounds related issues.
  5. Serve on various committees and task forces as appointed.
  6. Other duties as assigned.                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  1. Worked at least 4 years in the grounds profession, 2 years in a supervisory role. 180 class hours in horticulture/grounds related classes/training. At least two Certifications/licenses preferred.
  2. Ability to supervise by example.
  3. Ability to work effectively with data, numbers and schedules.
  4. An evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the institutions' goals, including a signed agreement with the GFU Statement of Faith and Statement of Community Responsibilities.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
